Choosing a solar system starts with one question: what do you actually need to run? Oversizing wastes money; undersizing leaves you in the dark during load-shedding. Here is how we approach it.
1. List your loads
Write down the appliances you want to power and roughly how many hours a day each one runs. Lights, Wi-Fi, a TV and phone charging are modest; borehole pumps, geysers, welders and air-conditioners are heavy hitters that change the picture completely.
2. Separate "essential" from "comfort"
Most homes don't need to run everything on backup. We split loads into:
- Essential — lights, internet, fridge, phone charging.
- Comfort — TV, microwave, smaller appliances.
- Heavy — geysers, pumps, motors (often best left on grid or on a dedicated circuit).
3. Match inverter and battery
The inverter must handle your peak simultaneous load, while the battery determines how long you can run when the sun is down. A 3kVA system suits a small home on essentials; a 10kVA system comfortably covers a large home or small business.
