Lithium Batteries Explained: Why LiFePO4?
What makes lithium (LiFePO4) batteries the standard for modern solar storage, and how they compare to older lead-acid batteries.
If you're buying a solar system today, the battery will almost certainly be lithium — specifically LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate). Here's why it has become the standard.
Longer life
A quality LiFePO4 battery delivers thousands of charge cycles — often 6,000 or more — compared to a few hundred for typical lead-acid batteries. Over the life of a system, that usually makes lithium cheaper per usable kilowatt-hour.
More usable capacity
Lead-acid batteries shouldn't be discharged too deeply without shortening their life. Lithium batteries can safely use a much larger share of their rated capacity, so you get more real storage from the same headline number.
Safer and smarter
LiFePO4 chemistry is stable and well-suited to daily cycling. Modern packs include a Battery Management System (BMS) that protects against overcharge, deep discharge and temperature extremes, and can report status to your inverter.

- Reputable cells and a solid BMS
- A clear warranty and cycle rating
- Correct voltage for your inverter (commonly 24V or 48V)
