Solar vs Generator: Which Backup Is Right for You?
Comparing solar-plus-battery systems with diesel and petrol generators for backup power in Zimbabwe.
When the grid goes down, you have two mainstream options for backup: a generator or a solar-plus-battery system. Both keep the lights on, but they behave very differently.
Running cost
Generators burn fuel every hour they run, and fuel is the single biggest lifetime cost. A solar system draws its energy from the sun — after the upfront investment, day-to-day running cost is close to zero.
Noise and maintenance
Generators are noisy and need regular servicing: oil, filters and fuel handling. A solar system runs silently and needs little more than occasional cleaning and a system health check.
Instant, automatic power
A good hybrid inverter switches to battery instantly when the grid fails — no walking outside to start a machine. Generators typically involve a delay and manual start unless you add automatic changeover.
When a generator still makes sense
